Tripoli sits on Libya's northwestern Mediterranean coast with an open sea horizon to the north. The combination of a long seafront promenade and elevated historic structures provides good conditions for viewing both sunrise and sunset over the water.
The castle's northern ramparts overlook the sea with a clear line to the eastern horizon. The outer walls are accessible before the museum opens at 9:00; museum admission is around 3 LYD.
The eastern stretch near the old harbour faces northeast along the coast, with no buildings between the promenade and the sea horizon. The flat walkway runs about 4 km and is freely accessible at all hours.
The historic harbour basin east of the Red Castle faces northeast, where the sun rises over the Mediterranean. The quayside is publicly accessible and a 5-minute walk from Martyrs' Square.
The Sea Gate is the northern entrance to the old medina, opening directly onto the harbour front. Standing here at first light gives a clear view eastward along the coast; it is a 2-minute walk from Martyrs' Square.
From the western terraces the sun drops over the port and open sea to the northwest. The elevated position -- roughly 25 metres above the harbour -- clears the low rooftops below.
The western end near Gurgi extends along open coast facing northwest. It is about 30 minutes on foot from Martyrs' Square, or 10 minutes by taxi.
The northern end of the square opens directly onto the sea with an unobstructed view toward the port entrance to the west. Centrally located, free to access, and typically busy with pedestrians in the early evening.
A public beach about 8 km west of the city centre, facing northwest along an open coastline with a clear western horizon. Taxis from the centre take around 15 minutes.
