Windhoek sits at around 1,680 metres on the Khomas Highland plateau, with low hills leaving the horizon largely open in most directions. The semi-arid climate keeps the air clear year-round, which produces well-defined colour gradients at both ends of the day.
The reserve's eastern shore, about 6 km from the city centre via the Eros neighbourhood, faces directly toward the Auas Mountain foothills across open water. Entry is free and there is no fixed gate; arriving around 5:30 a.m. in summer and 6:30 a.m. in winter works well.
The national monument stands on a prominent hill 5 km south of the centre along the B1 highway, with a clear eastern horizon over the Auas Mountains. Entry costs N$50; in winter, when sunrise is later, the site's morning opening aligns better with first light.
The six-storey building near Christuskirche has east-facing balconies on the upper floors with views over the surrounding hills. The rooftop cafe opens from 9 a.m., making this spot better suited to late winter sunrises than to summer mornings.
From the upper terrace, the view west extends over open scrubland toward the Khomas Highland with little obstruction. The site closes in the late afternoon, so sunset visits are most reliable in winter when the sun sets around 18:00.
The upper-floor balconies also face west over the city rooftops, and the cafe is typically open until 17:00. Winter sunsets in Windhoek fall around 18:00, so the timing works reasonably well from April through August.
The restored castle sits on a hill in Klein Windhoek, about 2 km from the city centre, with a wide west-facing terrace and views over the rooftops below. Non-guests can book at the restaurant or visit the wine bar, both of which are open from late afternoon.
The rooftop bar at the Am Weinberg Boutique Hotel in Klein Windhoek occupies an elevated position with a clear western outlook over the city. It is open to non-guests and is one of the few purpose-built sundowner venues in Windhoek.
The reserve in the Khomas Hochland hills, 24 km west of Windhoek, is open from sunrise to sunset and charges an entrance fee. The sun drops directly behind the highland ridgeline from the camp area and walking trails, giving an unobstructed bush sunset without driving further out of the city.
