Addis Ababa sits at around 2,350 m above sea level, and the surrounding ridges, Entoto to the north and Yeka to the northeast, rise above 3,000 m, providing elevated vantage points with open horizons. The dry season from October to May brings clear air and consistent conditions for sunrise and sunset viewing.
The viewpoint on the Entoto ridge, 10 km north of the city center, sits at 3,200 m and faces south-southeast over Addis Ababa. Free access; the road from Entoto Maryam Church leads directly to the lookout in about 5 minutes by car.
The flat wetlands around the Aba Samuel Reservoir, roughly 20 km south of central Addis on the road toward Debre Zeit, offer an unobstructed eastern horizon. The area is accessible from sunrise and frequented by birdwatchers; no entry fee for the outer wetland areas.
The square's open layout and absence of tall buildings to the east allow a clear view of the sun rising over the Bole plateau. The square is publicly accessible at all hours and served by multiple minibus routes.
The open clearings on the eastern slope of Yeka Hill face the flat Shoa plateau, giving a clean sunrise view with minimal obstruction. The Yeka Abado Integrated Forest is accessible from the Yeka sub-city in northeastern Addis via marked trails.
On the western side, the horizon opens toward the Entoto hills where the sun sets depending on the season. No entry fee; multiple minibus lines connect the square to all districts and run until late evening.
The garden's open, west-facing terraces at 3,000 m give an elevated view of the sun descending toward the western horizon. Admission is around 30 ETB; the garden is open until 6 pm, which covers sunset timing for most of the year.
The west-facing ridge of Yeka Hill overlooks the Addis Ababa skyline toward the Entoto mountains; the sun sets directly behind the city silhouette depending on the season.
Unity Park covers 40 hectares of the former Imperial Palace grounds in central Addis Ababa; the open western lawns face the setting sun without obstruction. Entry is 200 ETB for adults; the park closes at 6 pm.
The rooftop bar on the 12th floor of the Alem Gebre Building in Sarbet, southern Bole, offers a 360-degree city view with the western side facing directly into the sunset. No cover charge; drinks start at around 150 ETB.
