Berlin sits in the flat North German Plain, a landscape with few natural barriers to the horizon. The city's lakes, rivers, and open spaces -- especially in the east and west -- provide largely unobstructed views of sunrise and sunset.

Best sunrise spots in Berlin

  1. Tempelhofer Feld

The former Tempelhof airport is now a 300-hectare public park with an unobstructed horizon in every direction. The eastern side has no buildings blocking the view; the park opens at dawn, free admission.

  2. Siegessäule

The 285-step climb to the top (67 meters, entry 3 EUR) gives a panoramic view east toward Alexanderplatz and the TV Tower. Open daily from 9:30 am; nearest U/S-Bahn at Tiergarten or Bellevue.

  3. Müggelsee

Berlin's largest lake, about 8 km east of the city center, has a flat eastern shore ideal for watching sunrise over the water. Take S3 to Friedrichshagen, then tram 61 or a 20-minute walk to the shore.

  4. Oberbaumbrücke

This double-deck Spree crossing faces east; in the morning, early light reflects on the river between the two towers. Best viewed from the Friedrichshain embankment, a short walk from U1/U3 Schlesisches Tor.

Best sunset spots in Berlin

  1. Tempelhofer Feld

From the western side of the field, the sun sets over open ground with the 1930s terminal building as a backdrop. Accessible via U6, stops Paradestrasse or Tempelhof.

  2. Teufelsberg

This 115-meter hill, built from wartime rubble, is Berlin's highest point and offers a clear westward view over the Grunewald forest. The abandoned radar station on top is open on weekends for around 8 EUR; parking on Teufelsseechaussee.

  3. Siegessäule

Looking west from the platform, the sun drops behind the Grunewald with the Tiergarten tree canopy in the foreground. On-street parking available along Strasse des 17. Juni.

  4. Grunewaldturm

A 55-meter brick tower at the western edge of the city overlooks the Havel river to the west. Entry costs around 3 EUR; bus 218 from S-Bahn Wannsee stops nearby.

  5. Viktoriapark

A small park on Kreuzberg hill with a 66-meter summit and an open western horizon. Free access at all times; nearest U-Bahn is U6 Platz der Luftbrücke, about 10 minutes on foot.
