Best sunrise spots in Algiers

1. Balcon Saint-Raphaël

   From roughly 250 metres above sea level in El Biar, the bay curves below from east to west, and the morning sun rises over the northeastern arc of the Mediterranean. Take a bus to El Biar or a taxi (15-20 min from city centre); the terrace is a free public space.

2. Promenade des Sablettes

   This renovated seafront walkway in Hussein Dey sits on the eastern arc of the bay, where the horizon faces northeast - one of the few spots in Algiers where the sun rises directly over open water. Parking is available across the street; buses connect Hussein Dey to the city centre.

3. Jardin d'Essai du Hamma

   The 32-hectare botanical garden dates from 1832 and is directly adjacent to Jardin d'Essai metro station (Line 1). Morning light reaches the northeast-facing palm and ficus avenues near the bay shore. Open daily 09:00-19:00; small entrance fee at the gate.

4. Place des Martyrs

   At the foot of the Casbah and the port's edge, the square faces north directly over the harbour; the sun rises to the northeast over the Mediterranean with the whitewashed upper Casbah as a backdrop. Nearest metro station: Tafourah - Grande Poste (Line 1), a short walk north.

1. Notre-Dame d'Afrique

   The 19th-century basilica perches on a 124-metre cliff in Bologhine, with an unobstructed 180-degree view over the Bay of Algiers. No metro connection; reach it by taxi (approx. 30 min from city centre). Open Tuesday to Sunday 11:00-12:30 and 15:00-17:30; free entry.

2. Balcon Saint-Raphaël

   As the sun drops behind the western hills, the entire bay catches the last light in a wide sweep from this clifftop. Accessible by public bus or taxi; street parking is limited on weekends.

3. Maqam Echahid

   The 96-metre concrete monument on the heights of El Madania has a free esplanade facing northwest over the city and bay (observation platform: 200 DZD). Take Metro Line 1 to Jardin d'Essai, then walk uphill for 10 minutes, or Bus 73 from Place des Martyrs.

4. Place des Martyrs

   In the evening the square lies in shadow while golden light plays across the bay and port waters to the north. The seafront is free and accessible at all hours.
