Chattogram lies at the mouth of the Karnaphuli River on the Bay of Bengal, with an open western coastline that makes the Patenga area one of the most popular sunset destinations in Bangladesh. The hills north and east of the city offer elevated positions above the coastal plain for sunrise.

Best sunrise spots in Chattogram

  1. Chandranath Hill, Sitakunda

At 352 m, this is the highest accessible summit near Chattogram, located 42 km north in Sitakunda. From Dampara Bus Stand, take a bus to Sitakunda Bazar (1-1.5 hours, BDT 50-80), then a CNG to the hill base; the trek takes 1.5-2 hours, so plan to leave the base by 4:30 AM.

  2. Batali Hill

The hill's eastern face gives a clear view of dawn light over the lower harbor districts and the Bay of Bengal. Freely accessible via the paved path from Tiger Pass or Lalkhan Bazar, about 10 minutes on foot from either.

  3. DC Hill Park

The hilltop park has panoramic views east over the city; the approach road off Momin Road near Enayat Bazar is accessible before the park gates open at 10:00 AM. About 1 km from the city center, reachable on foot or by rickshaw.

  4. Foy's Lake

The lake sits in a hill basin in the Pahartali area, 9 km north of the city center. The ticketed amusement park opens at 10:30 AM, but the Pahartali railway station embankment runs along the eastern bank and gives a free, unobstructed view of the lake at dawn.

Best sunset spots in Chattogram

  1. Patenga Sea Beach

The beach faces southwest across the Bay of Bengal, with no obstructions on the horizon. From the city center a CNG costs around BDT 250-280 (30-40 minutes); the beach is free to enter and is most crowded in the hour before sunset.

  2. Batali Hill

From the western edge, the sun sets behind the Karnaphuli riverfront. No entry fee; easy to combine with a walk through the nearby old port area.

  3. Karnaphuli River Embankment

The public embankment near Sadarghat ferry terminal faces west-southwest down the river toward the Bay. Free to access; the ghat stays active with ferry and fishing traffic throughout the evening.

  4. DC Hill Park

Inside the fenced park (open 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM, free entry), terraces look west toward the Karnaphuli valley. Arrive well before closing to make the most of the evening light.
