La Paz occupies a canyon at around 3,640 meters, with the Altiplano plateau of El Alto rising to 4,150 meters at the canyon rim. The high altitude limits atmospheric scattering, producing more vivid colors at sunrise and sunset than at lower elevations.
The mirador in the Villa Pabón neighborhood, about 30 minutes on foot or 10 minutes by taxi from Plaza San Francisco, faces east over the full city bowl. Free access; no facilities. Illimani (6,438m) is visible to the southeast on clear mornings.
The rim of the El Alto plateau at 4,150 meters overlooks the city bowl directly below. Take Mi Teleférico's Red Line from the city center (BOB 3, early morning service from around 6am) to the El Alto station and walk to the edge. The city emerges from shadow as the sun clears the eastern Andes ridge.
The mountain pass at around 4,650 meters, 25km from La Paz on the road to Coroico, faces east over the Yungas valleys. Shared minibuses (trufis) depart from the Villa Fátima district. Temperatures at the pass can drop near freezing before dawn; bring warm layers.
The Yellow Line runs eastward from Sopocachi toward Parque Urbano; riding it at dawn puts the rising sun at eye level as it clears the canyon rim. Fare is BOB 3; first departures run from around 6am.
The western view from the same terrace takes in the El Alto plateau rim and the cable car lines crossing above the city. Arrive 20-30 minutes early, as the viewpoint is popular and the terrace is small.
The eroded clay canyon about 12km south of the city center, served by micro bus line 288, faces west and catches the low afternoon light. The pale grey and ochre formations turn orange in the 30 minutes before sunset. Entry costs around BOB 30 for foreign visitors; the site closes around 5:30-6pm, so check closing time against the sunset.
Westbound on the Yellow Line in the last hour of daylight, the Altiplano horizon is visible beyond the city rim. The moving gondola makes it easy to track the sunset without needing a fixed viewpoint.
The small hilltop park in the Sopocachi neighborhood, a 10-minute walk west of the Mi Teleférico Sopocachi station, has an open terrace facing west over the city. Free access; benches available. The park stays open past dusk.
