Fortaleza's coastline runs in multiple directions: the main city beaches face north-northwest while Praia do Futuro curves east-northeast, giving the city reliable conditions for both sunrise and sunset over open water.
The 260-meter iron pier at Praia de Iracema extends due north into the Atlantic, placing observers above the water with the eastern horizon unobstructed from the pier's end. Free entry, open 24 hours; reachable by bus along Av. Beira Mar.
This 5km beach east of the city center faces east-northeast, giving the most direct open-ocean sunrise view in Fortaleza. The beach is freely accessible at all hours via Av. Clóvis Arrais Maia; barracas (beach restaurants) open from around 8 AM.
The Mercado dos Peixes fish market opens at 5:30 AM as jangada fishing rafts return from overnight trips, providing a distinctive waterfront scene at first light. Located at the eastern end of Av. Beira Mar, about 1km from Meireles.
Brazil's most visited state park covers 1,581 hectares of Atlantic forest east of the city center and opens at 5:30 AM daily. East-facing clearings and riverside stretches provide unobstructed morning light; entrance at Av. Padre Antônio Tomás, Bairro Cocó, free of charge.
From the tip of the pier the sun descends over open sea to the northwest, with no buildings or land blocking the view on any side. Widely considered Fortaleza's signature sunset spot.
The north-northwest-facing waterfront offers clear views toward the setting sun with moored fishing boats in the foreground. The spot is less crowded than the main Beira Mar promenade and primarily frequented by locals.
This concrete pier on Av. Beira Mar near Av. Desembargador Moreira extends directly over the water and gives an elevated, unobstructed northwest view at sunset. The Feirinha da Beira Mar craft market sets up along the adjacent promenade from late afternoon.
At Fortaleza's western edge, where the Rio Ceará meets the Atlantic, this is the most directly west-facing beach in the city and the strongest option for watching the sun set over open water. The boardwalk near the ruins of a 17th-century Portuguese fort is about 9km from Praia de Iracema and primarily visited by locals.
The cultural complex one block from the Iracema waterfront has a terrace with elevated views toward the northwest coast. Outdoor areas are free to enter; the terrace bar requires a purchase. Open Tuesday to Sunday, closing at 6 PM (7 PM on weekends).
