Dongguan sits on the Pearl River Delta between Guangzhou and Shenzhen. The mix of hills, reservoirs, and river estuary coastline provides varied options for watching sunrise and sunset.
The western shore of this 8 km² scenic lake faces east, giving an unobstructed view over the water. Free entry, accessible via Dongguan Metro Line 2 to Songshan Lake Station.
At 488 m, this is Dongguan's highest point with open views to the east. Entry costs around 55 CNY. The hike to the summit takes roughly 90 minutes from the main gate, so start early.
A reservoir surrounded by low hills blocks the western sky but leaves the eastern horizon open. Free entry, parking available at the south gate. Best viewed from the dam wall.
The 189 m summit gives a 360-degree panorama over central Dongguan. Free entry, the park opens at 6:00. A paved path leads to the top in about 30 minutes.
Several peaks above 300 m with cleared viewpoints facing east. Free entry via the north or south gate. Parking lots fill up on weekends, arrive before 6:00.
This 19th-century coastal fort near Humen Bridge faces west across the Pearl River estuary. Free admission. The stone ramparts double as a viewing platform about 10 m above the waterline.
A waterfront promenade along the Pearl River estuary with unblocked western views. About 5 km of paved walkway, flat and wheelchair-accessible. Nearest bus stop: Binhai Bay Station.
From the western slope pavilion, you can see across the city to the Pearl River. Benches and a small plaza at the viewpoint. Less crowded on weekday evenings.
The Tea Mountain trail on the western ridge offers views toward Shenzhen Bay. The 3 km loop trail is well-marked and ends near the south gate parking area.
