Nanjing sits on the southern bank of the Yangtze River with Purple Mountain rising to 448 m in the east. The combination of waterfront, hilltop, and lakeside locations provides varied vantage points for both sunrise and sunset.
At 448 m, this is the highest point in central Nanjing with an unobstructed eastern horizon. Take Metro Line 2 to Xiamafang, then bus 20 to the trailhead; the hike to the summit takes about 45 minutes.
The restored wall section near Jiefang Gate faces east toward Purple Mountain. The walkway opens at 8:00 in summer (8:30 in winter), entry 30 CNY. Arrive early on weekdays to avoid crowds.
The eastern shore near Liang Zhou island offers clear sightlines toward Purple Mountain. The park opens at 6:00 year-round, free entry.
The ridge trail on the east side overlooks the Yangtze with an open horizon. Access via Yanziji Park entrance, about 15 min walk from Yanziji Metro station (Line S8).
The 52 m tower on Lion Hill has a 360-degree observation deck. East-facing balconies catch the sun rising over the city. Entry 40 CNY, open from 7:30.
Walk to the western causeway for views across the lake toward the Hexi district skyline. Best from the benches near Huan Zhou bridge.
The main viewpoint platform faces west over a wide bend of the Yangtze. Free access; the paved path takes around 20 minutes from the parking area.
The pedestrian walkway on the upper deck provides wide westward views over the Yangtze. Access from the south side via bus 532 or 159 to Daqiao Nanbao station. Free to walk, about 1.5 km one way.
A compact lake park in western Nanjing with open water reflecting the sky. Entry 35 CNY, closest stop is Mochou Lake on Metro Line 2. The west-facing pavilion near the lake center offers the best view.
The west-facing side overlooks the Yangtze and the bridge. On clear days visibility extends well beyond the far bank. About 10 min walk from Jianning Road Metro station (Line 3).
