Sapporo sits on a flat basin at 43°N, surrounded by mountains to the south and west. The city's low-density eastern suburbs and the elevated western hills provide clear sightlines across the Ishikari Plain.
A flat agricultural hill 6km southeast of the city center with wide unobstructed views east over the Ishikari Plain. Entry ¥520; take bus 14 from Fukuzumi subway station (Toho Line), about 15 minutes.
The clearing around the main shrine hall opens eastward through old-growth forest in Maruyama Park. Free access from dawn; 10 minutes on foot from Nishi-11-chome subway station (Tozai Line).
The observation platform at the top of this 1972 Winter Olympics ski jump sits at 307m and faces east over the city. Aerial tramway from the base: ¥500 return; open from around 9:00, seasonal closing.
This Isamu Noguchi-designed park in the eastern suburbs has a flat, unobstructed horizon to the east from the glass pyramid plaza. Free entry; 3.5km by cycle path from Kanjo-dori-Higashi subway station (Toho Line).
The pond in the north section of the park reflects morning light from the east with no tall buildings on the eastern horizon. Free access, 3 minutes from Nakajima Koen subway station (Namboku Line).
The 531m summit faces west over the city center toward the Teine Hills. A cable car and ropeway take visitors up (¥2,100 return); the system operates from 10:30 and runs until after dark, with last-car times varying by season.
The 38th-floor observation deck at 160m sits directly above Sapporo Station and faces west over the Teine Hills. Entry ¥740; open daily 10:00–23:00, no additional travel time from the station.
The glass pyramid and the small artificial Moere Mountain frame views to the west. The park closes at 22:00 in summer and at sunset in winter.
The western shore of the main pond is open to the horizon at dusk. No closing time; well-lit paths year-round.
