Kakamega sits at around 1,500 m above sea level in western Kenya, bordered to the north by the country's only tropical rainforest. The elevated terrain and open ridgelines provide clear sightlines in most directions.
Buyangu Hill is a rocky summit in the KWS section of Kakamega Forest with unobstructed views east toward the Nandi Escarpment. The summit is a 4 km walk from the KWS Buyangu gate; non-resident entry is around KES 1,500.
At 1,700 m, Lirhanda Hill is the highest point in Kakamega Forest. KWS rangers run guided sunrise hikes departing at 5:00 AM from the Buyangu gate; the round trip takes about 5 hours.
The trail from the KFS Isecheno Forest Station to Isiukhu Falls runs through east-facing forest that channels low morning light deep into the canopy. One way takes 1-2 hours; KFS entry starts at around KES 200 for Kenyan residents.
KWS organises afternoon walks departing around 3:00 PM, timed to reach the summit for sunset. The westward panorama over the forest canopy is unobstructed.
A 40 m basalt rock dome on a ridge about 3 km south of Kakamega town center, reachable on foot from the roadside at no charge. The elevated ridge position gives open western views over the surrounding plains.
Open glades on the western edge of the KFS-managed Isecheno section catch the setting sun without obstruction. The KFS station is 12 km southeast of Kakamega town via the C37 road toward Shinyalu; non-resident entry is around KES 600.
