Sunrise and Sunsetin Bamako, Mali

Bamako sits on both banks of the Niger, which runs roughly east-west through the city and provides open horizons in both directions from its bridges. Several hills on the northern and western edge offer elevated westward views, and skies are typically clear from November through May.

Best sunrise spots in Bamako

1. Pont des Martyrs

   The pedestrian walkway on the eastern side of the bridge faces directly upstream toward the sunrise; fishermen leave by pirogue from the banks below in the early morning. The bridge is a 15-minute walk from the Grand Marche.

2. Pont du Roi Fahd

   This 1992 bridge is quieter than Pont des Martyrs in the early morning; the eastern walkway faces upstream toward the sunrise with a clear view of the Niger bending away to the east.

3. Parc National du Mali

   Open promenades between large baobab and kapok trees in this 103-hectare park face east, with clear sky views at sunrise. Entry costs 1,000 CFA (approx. 1.50 EUR); taxis from the city centre take around 20 minutes.

Best sunset spots in Bamako

1. Colline de Point G

   A flat-topped plateau about 80 m above the surrounding city on Bamako's northern edge, with an unobstructed western panorama over the rooftops and the Niger. Access is free; a taxi from the city centre costs around 2,000 CFA (approx. 3 EUR).

2. Pont des Martyrs

   From the western railing, the sun sets over the open river to the right of Pont du Roi Fahd, roughly 300 m away. The low bridge deck keeps the horizon line over the water, not the bank.

3. Pont du Roi Fahd

   The western walkway has a direct westward view along the river, with small riverside cafes on the south bank open from late afternoon.

4. Colline de Koulouba

   At around 404 m, Koulouba is the highest prominent ground in central Bamako. The public road below the presidential palace gates offers a south- and westward view over the city and river. Photography near the checkpoints is not permitted.

5. Badalabougou Riverbank

   The south bank of the Niger here faces northwest across open water, with no obstructions on the western horizon. Several small restaurants and guesthouses along the bank, including Badalodge, have riverside terraces open from late afternoon.
