Sunrise and Sunsetin Kano, Nigeria

Kano sits on the flat Sahelian savanna of northern Nigeria at around 480m elevation. The wide, open horizons in most directions make sunrise and sunset visible without major obstructions from most elevated points in and around the city.

Best sunrise spots in Kano

1. Dala Hill

   Rising about 50m above the city center, Dala Hill offers a 360-degree view across Kano. The hill is in the Dala district, roughly a 10-minute walk from the Kofar Mata gate, and has no entrance fee.

2. Tiga Reservoir

   Tiga Reservoir lies about 50km south of Kano off the road toward Makarfi. The flat, open water surface provides unobstructed views to the east; private transport is needed as no regular minibus service runs directly there.

3. Falgore Game Reserve

   Falgore Game Reserve covers open Guinea savanna about 80km south of Kano. The flat, largely treeless grasslands leave the eastern horizon completely unobstructed; entry requires a permit from the reserve headquarters in Rugu village.

4. Challawa Gorge Dam

   The dam sits about 65km southeast of Kano on the Challawa River, in a rocky valley that opens to the east. Access is by private vehicle via the Kano-Gombe road; the shoreline near the dam wall is freely accessible.

Best sunset spots in Kano

1. Dala Hill

   The western face looks out over the Old City rooftops toward open farmland on the city outskirts. This is a popular local spot, so arriving at least 30 minutes before sunset helps secure a good position.

2. Kano City Walls (Giwar Kano)

   The restored mud-brick walls near Kofar Mata face west across the Old City, with traditional dye pits and rooftops in the foreground. The walkable section runs about 500m and is most easily accessed from the Kofar Mata gate.

3. Tiga Reservoir

   The western bank offers clear water views at dusk with no buildings or trees blocking the horizon. Fishermen typically use the shore from early morning, so access to the waterfront is straightforward.

4. Bagauda Lake Hotel

   Situated on the northern shore of Tiga Reservoir about 60km south of Kano, the hotel has a west-facing terrace directly on the water. Day visitors are admitted for a small resort access fee.
