Best sunrise spots in Dakar

1. Phare des Mamelles

   The 100 m volcanic hill in the Ouakam district gives a 360-degree panorama including clear views east over the city toward the bay. Open Tuesday to Sunday from around 9:30 AM; entrance is roughly 3,000 XOF.

2. Monument de la Renaissance Africaine

   The observation deck at around 80 m height provides an elevated east-facing view over Dakar and the bay. Open daily from 9 AM; elevator access costs approximately 3,000-5,000 XOF.

3. Plage de Yoff

   A local fishing beach about 10 km north of the city center where pirogues launch into the Atlantic at first light. Free access; arrive before 7 AM to catch the morning departure of the fishing fleet.

4. Corniche Est / Anse Bernard

   A small east-facing cove 2-5 km from central Dakar with views toward Ile de Goree. Free and walkable from the Plateau district; several restaurant terraces nearby for breakfast after sunrise.

   The westernmost point of the African continent, about 20 km from central Dakar, faces open ocean with a completely unobstructed horizon. No official entrance fee, though sturdy shoes help on the rocky shoreline.

3. Phare des Mamelles

   From Dakar's highest point, the sun sets directly over the Atlantic to the west. Note that the lighthouse closes to visitors before actual sunset time, so arrive in the late afternoon.

4. Monument de la Renaissance Africaine

   The monument faces west toward the open Atlantic; the two hours before closing (around 6:45 PM) are the best window. Located in Ouakam, 5 minutes from Phare des Mamelles.
