Sunrise and Sunsetin Sanaa, Yemen

Sanaa sits in a highland basin at around 2,300 meters, enclosed by mountains on all sides. The altitude and dry air produce sharp contrasts at both sunrise and sunset, particularly over the UNESCO-listed Old City.

Best sunrise spots in Sanaa

1. Jabal Nuqum

   The mountain directly east of Sanaa rises to about 2,800m and gives a wide panorama over the city as the sun clears the ridgeline. The trail starts near the old city walls and takes roughly 2 hours on foot.

2. Bab al-Yemen

   The main gate of the Old City faces east, so early morning light hits the surrounding tower houses directly. The area is walkable from most central neighborhoods and there is no entry fee.

3. Al-Sabeen Park

   The park's eastern section has open sight lines toward Jabal Nuqum. Free entry; reachable by shared taxi from the city center.

Best sunset spots in Sanaa

1. Al-Sabeen Park

   From the western part of the park, the mountains beyond the city form a natural backdrop at dusk. The large open lawns make it straightforward to find an unobstructed spot.

2. Wadi Dhahr

   The valley lies about 15km northwest of Sanaa with terraced fields and unobstructed west-facing views. A shared taxi from central Sanaa takes around 30 minutes.

3. Dar al-Hajar

   This historic palace stands on an isolated rock pillar inside Wadi Dhahr. The west-facing valley frames the light as the sun drops behind the surrounding cliffs, and the palace silhouette is one of Yemen's most recognized scenes.
